Objective:

This academy will help to determine the legalities that govern the school board.

Description:

School board members must be familiar with the legal issues that affect policy. In this session, participants review the legal duties of the school board and the Tennessee Sunshine Law. Participants also learn about conflicts of interest and legal considerations regarding employee assignments, transfers and dismissals.

Important issues included in the module are:

 

• Powers and Duties of School Boards
• Open Meetings/Open Records
• Liability Issues
• Students' Rights-First Amendment
• Employment Issues
• Student Discipline
• Education Improvement Act Legal Issues

Presenters:

Randall G. Bennett serves as Associate Executive Director/Legal Counsel to the Tennessee School Boards Association. He oversees the membership services, legal and policy departments for the Tennessee School Boards Association. Randy has been with the association for 11 years. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State University and The Nashville School of Law, graduating from both institutions with honors. He was formerly an elected member of the Johnson City Tennessee Board of Education and served as a public safety officer with the Johnson City Police Department.

Maximum Enrollment: 40 school board members.
