| Award for Excellence in Education Reporting
2008 Journalism Award Packet
Purpose
To recognize journalists in Tennessee for outstanding
reporting and editorial comment on public education issues. Favor will be given to news coverage leading to a better understanding and support of public education.
Eligibility
Any journalist working for a general circulation Tennessee
newspaper or TV station is eligible. No entry fee is required. Articles published or reports
aired during the period of July 15, 2007 through June 14, 2008 may
be entered. Note: Entries will only be accepted with the prior approval of the school board.
Criteria for Selection
Entries will be judged on importance of issue; quality
of writing or reporting; documentation and support of major points;
contribution to understanding education issues; and advocacy of public
education.
Categories
Competition is divided into three divisions. In this competition, the following descriptions will apply to the Print and Broadcast categories:
- News Reporting: coverage of any timely news or planned event.
- Feature: soft news, with little or no time element.
- Editorieal: any article appearing on the editorial page or any signed personal columns.
Entries may be a single article/report or a series
of articles/reports. A series MUST be designated as a series
in the newspaper issue or broadcast in which the article or report
appears, (i.e. first in a four-part series). Individual reporters
may enter only one article or report per category.
Format of Submission
Contestants must submit originals of printed pieces and five copies each of both the entry form and entry. TV submission(s) must be include six easily
identified copies on either standard VHS tapes or DVDs. All articles, audiotapes, videotapes and DVDs
become the property of TSBA.
